Some Recommended Websites

I will be out of the office for the next week, so there will not be an issue of Weightology Weekly this weekend.  In the meantime, here are some recommended sites for you to check out:

  • Max Condition.  Max Condition is a fitness and nutrition website run by Jamie Hale.  Jamie is a strong believer in an evidence-based approach to health and fitness, and knows a lot of about general logic and reason.  He has a number of articles and books on his site that are highly recommended, and you can trust him to give you the straight facts when it comes to exercise and nutrition.
  • Body Recomposition.  Body Recomposition is a site dedicated to exactly what the title indicates...changing your body, whether you are interested in weight or fat loss, or muscle gain.  It is run by Lyle McDonald, who I have personally known since the 1990's.  Lyle takes an evidence-based approach, and his site has a wealth of good information, including forums and books that he has written.
  •  CarbSanity.  CarbSanity is an excellent blog for science-minded readers.  She is an individual who has had tremendous success with low-carbohydrate diets, yet has been highly critical of the pseudoscience, misinformation, and dogma that has been perpetuated by some individuals that advocate these diets.  While she has been successful with the low-carb approach, she also illustrates why carbohydrates are not as evil or fat-producing as some have made them out to be.
  • Core Concepts Wellness.  Core Concepts Wellness is run by Mike Howard, who I've been getting to know over the past year.  Mike takes an evidence-based approach to personal training and nutrition, and it shows in his clients' results.  He is a friendly, down-to-earth guy and very knowledgeable.  Some of the individuals mentioned in this blog post are also on his advisory board.
  • Body Improvements.  Body Improvements is run by Steve Troutman and Gordon Kocher.  Their site has a wealth of offerings, from training to forums to exercise videos to articles.  They both know their stuff and are level-headed, highly competent trainers.
  • Lean Gains.  Lean Gains is run by Martin Berkhan, who is a nutritional consultant and personal trainer.  Martin takes a unique approach to weight loss known as intermittent fasting.  It is quite a bit different from many other dietary approaches, but it's an approach that Martin and his clients have had tremendous success with.  Martin also has a very keen mind for the science in this area.  If you've struggled with more traditional approaches, you may want to give Martin's methods a try.
  • Gluten-Free Fitness.  Erin Elberson has created a site dedicated to positively impacting people's nutrition and lifestyle, particularly individuals with celiac disease or who are gluten-sensitive.  If you have issues with gluten, her site can be a tremendous resource.
  • Adipo Insights.  LynMarie Daye has created a blog looking at the science of body fat regulation and metabolism.  It is an excellent resource that I highly recommend, and will point you to scientific articles of which you may not even be aware.
  • Focused Energy, LLC.  Becky Hellerstein was a colleague of mine when I was a researcher at an obesity clinic, and she was one of the dietitians.  She now has her own business, and she is an expert in pediatric weight management and kids' nutrition.  In fact, she helped developed the pediatric program for the obesity clinic where we used to work.
  • Creating Peace With Food.  Brandi Olden was a dietitian at the obesity clinic where I was a researcher.  She specializes in eating disorders, weight management, and family nutrition, and her clients have had outstanding results (the clients in our clinic had average weight losses of over 40 pounds in 3 months!).
  • The Muscle Couple.  If you're looking for new workout or nutrition ideas, Jay and Anh Campbell have put together a site dedicated to helping everyone improve their health, fitness, and family life.  The site has videos of various weight training exercises, as well as workouts and information on nutrition.  Back in the 1990's, Jay and I were members of the now defunct news bulletin board known as misc.fitness.weights.

I hope everyone has a great weekend, and I'll respond to any messages when I return.
