In this issue:

  • Spreading the Protein…Slow or Fast.  For a long time, it has been believed that spreading your protein intake throughout the day will help prevent loss of lean body mass.  People have also believed that slow-digesting proteins, such as casein, are better for maintaining muscle during fat loss compared to fast digesting proteins, such as whey.  However, the success of intermittent fasting approaches such as that of Martin Berkhan has brought these beliefs into question.  Click here to read about some recent research in this area.
  • Testing the Fitbit.  In past issues of Weightology Weekly, I have talked about the importance of non-exercise activity thermogenesis (NEAT) and overall physical activity levels in regards to weight loss and weight maintenance.  I have also talked about the importance of objectively measuring activity using devices such as accelerometers and pedometers.  A relatively new accelerometer known as the Fitbit has been gaining some traction in the market.  How accurate is this device for estimating energy expenditure?  Click here to find out.
